Hello… This is the Sondos family. A family of four from the Gaza Strip: a widowed mother and three children. My eldest, Ibrahim, is 12 years old; my second, Yaqeen, is 9 years old; and my last, Mohammed, is 8. We fought a war that was nothing short of tragic; it was genocide and ethnic cleansing. I lost my husband in 2019 to heart disease, and my children and I are left to struggle through life. I play the role of breadwinner for my small family.
On the third day of the war, we were displaced to the UNRWA school in Al-Bureij camp. It was as if life had suddenly stopped. The conditions were difficult, with more than 100 displaced people in the same cramped space due to the small size of the school. Then we were displaced again to the Deir al-Balah area after our camp became a combat zone. We lived in a tent, where the difficulties increased greatly. We spent the winter and summer in tents that did not protect us from the cold of winter or the heat of summer.❤️
The basic necessities of life became difficult, including the lack of gas for cooking, so we were forced to cook on fire and collect wood from the surrounding areas by the children. The financial situation became very poor due to the war, the large number of displacements, the high prices, the scarcity of food supplies, and the lack of job opportunities. I am an unemployed woman. At first, we became completely dependent on food aid, then we began the stage of hunger, as there is no food supplies and no money to buy them.❤️
We all began to suffer from health problems. I suffer from back, neck, and joint ailments, and all the children suffer from difficult seasonal illnesses such as influenza, smallpox, and other skin diseases. Treatment was difficult to obtain at health centers, and when it was available, it was expensive…. Obtaining water was an achievement. The whole family would line up, whether fresh or salty, so that each member could get a gallon or two.
Another form of suffering is the lack of baby formula and diapers, which were in very limited supply and at high prices. Today, we are experiencing the largest famine the world has ever seen, with no food to eat and no basic necessities to ensure a normal life. And here we are today, waiting for food and aid to enter so we can receive some of it. ❤️
